There literally are millions of people that make a living on commissions only or a hybrid of salary and commissions.

I agree, dumping a ton of money on a guy, come what may, is just plain dumb.

But as others have pointed out, who would sign a merit based contract when other opportunities are basically giving the guy a golden parachute from the outset.
